Kanpur: A 19-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide by hanging herself at her home in Kanpur’s Kalyanpur area on Saturday, with her family accusing her brother-in-law of driving her to the extreme step by threatening to circulate her obscene photographs if her elder sister did not withdraw a criminal case against him. Police said an investigation is underway.According to the family, the victim had been under severe mental stress due to repeated threats from her brother-in-law.The victim’s father, a furniture trader and resident of Kalyanpur, said he has four sons and four daughters. He told police that his middle daughter is married to a man from Kamalganj in Farrukhabad. Around one-and-a-half months ago, the son-in-law allegedly assaulted his wife, following which an FIR was registered against him at Kalyanpur police station.The family alleged that after the case was filed, the accused repeatedly called both the eldest and the youngest daughters and threatened them. They claimed he warned the 19-year-old victim that if her sister did not withdraw the case, he would make her obscene photographs viral. According to the family, the continuous threats left the teenager mentally distressed.Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) SM Qasim Abidi said Kalyanpur police reached the spot after receiving information and sent the body for postmortem.
