A techie’s old job hunting experience has resurfaced online, sparking debate over an alleged lowball offer from Infosys. Despite already earning ₹8.7 lakh and holding a ₹14 lakh offer, he was reportedly offered just ₹7.5 lakh after clearing two interview rounds.
The incident was shared by an X user @coolcoder56, who captioned it, “Bro took a revenge ☠️”. The account shared a screenshot of what appeared to be a Reddit post in which a techie detailed his experience while looking for his first job switch.
According to the original post, the professional was already earning ₹8.7 lakh per annum and had an offer worth ₹14 lakh when an Infosys recruiter approached him. The recruiter reportedly asked about his existing salary, expected compensation and offers in hand before proceeding with the interview process.
The candidate appeared for two rounds of interviews and cleared both. However, after the interviews, the recruiter allegedly informed him that he had been selected but that the maximum salary the company could offer was ₹7.5 lakh per annum.
The candidate said he was surprised by the offer, particularly because it was lower than his existing salary. When he questioned the recruiter about it, he was reportedly told that “it is what it is.”
He initially declined the offer. However, minutes later, he called the recruiter back and asked her to generate the offer letter. When she questioned his decision, he reportedly said he was interested in the company because of the possibility of better work-life balance and potential onsite opportunities.
The recruiter accepted his reasoning and generated the offer letter after around two weeks. However, when the candidate finally received the offer, he rejected it, citing the low remuneration and wishing the recruiter luck in finding a suitable candidate.
The candidate claimed that his rejection was followed by multiple messages from the recruiter as well as an email from her supervisor. He said he chose not to respond to them.
The original post ended by asking other professionals whether they had experienced similar situations.
The story subsequently drew strong reactions online, with users divided between those who found the candidate’s response satisfying and those who believed it could potentially have professional consequences.
“Putting someone through multiple rounds of interview after getting all the details and then lowballing them expecting they’ll accept out of interview fatigue. I would have gone 2 steps ahead and escalated to every senior person I could find from recruiters company. And then would have posted all over social media tagging her,” said one user.
Another user warned that the decision could potentially backfire later: “But yaar this can back fire in the near future. It’s a small fkin world out there. Kal ko ye recruiter kisi better company mein switch karti hai & IF BY CHANCE he ends up w/ her again, he’s kind of screwed no?”
A third user took a more critical view of Infosys, commenting: “I luvvvv infosys revenge stories…scam ass company. Were paying 3 lpa in 2000 nd today too. Exploiting to the core.”
Another called the move: “Petty and ego-satisfying, but kinda stupid thing to do”
Some users, however, felt the recruiter deserved the treatment. One wrote:
“They had it coming. I would have left it to joining date to ghost them. They deserve it.”
Another user suggested taking the situation even further:
“I would have gone further and accepted it. And two days before joining, I would have rejected it.”
