Nagpur: The deceased organ donation programme in Nagpur crossed a milestone with Kondba Dattatraya Madavi (52) of Ghatanji in Yavatmal, becoming the 200th deceased donor since the establishment of the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), Nagpur, in 2013. This is the 15th deceased organ donation in Nagpur this year.Madavi, a Zilla Parishad school teacher, had expressed to his wife that he wanted to donate blood while alive and his organs after death. He met with a road accident on Aug 6 and was brought to the trauma centre of Govt Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Nagpur, at around 10 am the same day.Doctors diagnosed severe bleeding in his brain and a critical neurological condition. A brain-stem death committee subsequently declared him brain-stem dead. Following counselling by GMCH transplant coordinators Dr Sumit Chahakar, Dheeraj and Dr Amit Ahire, his family gave written consent to donate his heart, lungs, liver and both kidneys.No suitable recipients were identified for heart and lungs. The liver was allocated to a 39-year-old man at a private hospital in Nagpur, while one kidney went to a 62-year-old woman at GMCH, Nagpur, and the other to a 25-year-old woman at a private hospital in Nagpur.ZTCC arranged a free ambulance to transport Madavi’s mortal remains to his native Ghatanji. Madavi is survived by his wife Jyoti, son Arnav (13) and daughter Riddhi (9).Earlier, Smruti Dilip Sarakar (51) of Korambhitola in Gondia, became Nagpur’s 199th deceased organ donor since 2013 and the 14th donor this year.Sarakar, a homemaker, was admitted to AIIMS, Nagpur, on Aug 1. On Aug 7, doctors diagnosed a brain haemorrhage and severe neurological deterioration. The AIIMS brain-stem death committee subsequently declared her brain-stem dead.Following counselling by AIIMS transplant coordinators Vishal Bhanudge and Kirti Punde, her daughter Priyanka Mandal and other family members consented to donate both kidneys. One kidney was transplanted into a 60-year-old male patient at AIIMS-Nagpur, while the second went to a 39-year-old male patient at a kidney care centre, Nagpur.ZTCC also provided a free ambulance to transport her mortal remains to Korambhitola.ZTCC president Dr Manish Shrigiriwar and secretary Dr Shailesh Gahukar, along with transplant coordinator Dinesh Mandpe, coordinated the organ allocation and transplantation process in both cases.
