Tangedco has replaced 55 electrical poles that were damaged due to strong winds in Kannamangalam and surrounding farming villages in Tiruvannamalai on Saturday.
Tangedco officials said that farming villages like Kalasamuthiram, Kongarampattu, Kolathur, Andipalayam, Kuppam, and Kannamangalam have been witnessing regular evening rain with strong winds. Most lands in these villages are under paddy cultivation. “Unscheduled power cuts, especially after damage of electrical poles due to winds has affected farming as farmers were unable to operate motor pump sets to irrigate their land,” said G. Muthu, a farmer.
Against this backdrop, many farming villages along Cheyyar river near Arani and Polur towns have been witnessing strong winds and rain. Tangedco officials said that at least 60-70 electrical poles were damaged. Most of the electrical poles are located on agricultural lands and village roads.
Each electrical pole, which costs ₹2,950, measures around 30 feet in height. In order to prevent power interruption in farming villages, Tangedco officials said that 55 new electrical poles have replaced damaged poles in Kannamangalam substation limits that have around 45,000 consumers.
At present, Kannamangalam and surrounding farming villages have around 2,500 electrical poles. Tangedco officials said that strong winds have not damaged any electrical transformers in the region. “Most of the electrical poles are damaged during evening hours. Repair works are done during the daytime. On an average, each new electrical pole could be installed in two hours. In five days, Tangedco has replaced 55 damaged poles,” M. Silambarasan, Assistant Engineer (AE), Tangedco (Kannamangalam), told The Hindu.
Residents urged Tangedco officials to ensure uninterrupted power supply in the area due to rising heat.
