Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that he would step down as chief minister following directions from the Congress high command.

Soon after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday announced during a breakfast meeting with Cabinet colleagues that he would step down from the post, the BJP launched a sharp attack on the Congress over its handling of governance in the state.
Speaking to the media, BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai accused the Congress of harbouring the syndrome of chief ministers resigning and said that their governance in Karnataka was zero.
He further alleged that the state had suffered due to infighting within the party over the chief minister’s post.
“This syndrome of Congress CM resigning continues. From day one, DK Shivakumar had made it clear that he would take over after 2.5 years. The governance of Congress was totally zero in Karnataka. The state has suffered because of the infighting of the Congress over the post of chief minister,” Bommai said.
‘I Am Resigning’: CM Siddaramaiah To Cabinet Ministers
During a meeting with Cabinet colleagues on Thursday morning, Siddaramaiah announced that he would step down as chief minister following directions from the Congress high command, formally paving the way for a leadership transition in Karnataka.

He added that the party leadership would take a final decision on his successor.
“I am resigning as instructed by the high command. The high command will decide the next chief minister,” Siddaramaiah said.
He further assured full support to whoever succeeds him. “Whoever gets picked as the next chief minister, they will have my full cooperation,” the chief minister said.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who is widely seen as the frontrunner for the chief minister’s post, also attended the breakfast meeting.
DK Shivakumar To Become Karnataka’s Next CM?
The ongoing political churn has reignited discussions around the long-speculated rotational chief ministership formula within the Karnataka Congress.
Notably, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar had held a widely discussed “breakfast diplomacy” meeting in December 2025 amid similar buzz over a possible power-sharing arrangement.

As per sources, DK Shivakumar is likely to become the next chief minister of Karnataka, and he is expected to take an oath on Saturday (May 30).
Since the Congress formed the government in Karnataka, political circles have remained abuzz with speculation over a possible rotational chief ministership arrangement between Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar.
While the party leadership has never publicly confirmed any power-sharing pact, rumours of a “2.5-year CM formula” have resurfaced repeatedly, especially during key meetings between Karnataka leaders and the Congress high command in Delhi.
