Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has traded political rallies for TikTok trends—at least for a few seconds. The politician made a surprise appearance in Katy Perry’s latest promotional video for her new single, ‘Watch It Burn’, and it’s his enthusiastic hopping into the frame that has sent social media into a frenzy.
The TikTok begins with Perry singing directly into the camera in an outdoor bus parking area. As the beat drops, she starts bouncing backwards, revealing a group of people hopping along with her. Moments later, Trudeau springs into the frame, smiles at Perry, hops alongside her for a few seconds, then bounces out just as quickly, his hair flying with every jump.
The cameo comes weeks after Trudeau jokingly described attending one of Perry’s performances instead of Canada’s opening FIFA World Cup match as “supportive boyfriend duties.” At the time, he wrote on X: “Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call. But you know who I’m rooting for to take the Cup.” The latest video has divided the internet, with reactions ranging from amused to bewildered.
One user wrote: “There’s a guy hopping through this video that froze the bank accounts of non criminal Canadians, he banned millions from air travel and helped pay for a passport system that segregated Canadians from every day life. Within 10 years he made Canada unrecognizable & now he walks & hops around like none of what he did ever happened or even matters. It’s infuriating.”

Another couldn’t get over the former PM’s dance moves. “He has to be the most awkward guy to roam the earth.”
Some marvelled at how quickly life can change. “From running a G7 nation to jumping around like an easter mascot. Life comes at you fast.” Others, however, found the moment surprisingly sweet. “I actually find this romantic! Because only love can make you hop like a bunny for your lover when you were once one of the most powerful leaders on earth 🥺.”
Not everyone understood the backlash aimed at Perry. “why are the comments dragging her so hard? isn’t she a good singer? other than hopping with her bf in the context what’s the issue?”
Another fan came to Trudeau’s defence. “God I love Justin Trudeau so much, Katy Perry better realise how lucky she is.” And perhaps the most light-hearted take of the lot read: “Can’t they all just get along and enjoy the achievement of making Justin Trudeau an extra in an American pop star’s music video?”
