SRN Hospital docs reconstruct cancer patient's jaw in complex surgery
A team of doc performed a complex surgery of a 55-year old person at SRNH

Prayagraj: Doctors at Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital of Prayagraj successfully reconstructed the lower jaw of a 55-year-old cancer patient after performing a highly complex 11-hour surgery. The patient, Gangaram, a govt school peon from Siddharthnagar district, was suffering from cancer of the lower jaw for nearly six months. After consulting several major hospitals in Gorakhpur and Varanasi, he approached SRN Hospital. The specialists here discovered that nearly 70% of his lower jaw was affected by cancer.Recognising the complexity of the case, cancer surgeon Dr Rajul Abhishek and head of the plastic surgery department Dr Mohit Jain devised a multi-disciplinary treatment plan.During the marathon surgery conducted around two weeks ago, surgeons completely removed the cancer-affected portion of the jaw and reconstructed it using the patient’s fibula bone harvested from the leg.The intricate reconstruction was carried out through advanced micro-vascular surgery, a procedure that involves reconnecting tiny blood vessels under magnification to ensure the transplanted bone remains viable. The surgery not only removed the cancer but also restored the patient’s facial structure.Following five days of intensive post-operative monitoring in the ICU, the patient recovered steadily and has been discharged. Doctors said dental implants would be placed in the reconstructed jaw at a later stage to further improve functionality.Plastic surgeon Dr Yasharth Sharma, anaesthetist Dr Shivendu Ojha and the operation theatre and ICU staff played key roles in the successful outcome.
