A software developer has shared how a painful comment from his manager during a client call became the turning point that pushed him to completely change his career path. Seven months later, he says, he landed a role at Google.
The story, posted on Reddit, has resonated with many professionals who said they could relate to difficult work experiences and the desire to prove themselves.
A Harsh Remark Changed Everything
In a post on Reddit, the developer said he spent three years at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). He described the first two years as fairly normal, but said things changed during his third year.
Recalling one incident, he wrote, “I’ve been at TCS for 3 years. For the first 2 years, I was just existing tbh, getting placed despite my skills at TCS was a big thing for me.” He then shared what happened during a client call.
According to him, his manager was upset because he logged off at 7 pm. “My manager shouted at me on a client call because I logged off at 7 PM. He literally said, ‘Tum jaise log sirf support ke layak ho, development tumhare bas ki baat nahi hai’.”
He Focused Only On Studying
The remark left him devastated. “Usually, I would ignore my manager, but is baar kar nhi paya. That night I actually cried. I felt useless,” he wrote. He decided to improve his skills and spent the next seven months following a strict routine.
“For 7 months, my life was just Office -> Leetcode -> Sleep. No weekends, no parties. Bas ghista raha.” He admitted that preparing for coding interviews was difficult.
“DSA was a nightmare initially, felt like giving up every week. But I focused hard on DP/Trees/Graphs and polished my Android basics.”
His efforts finally paid off. “Yesterday, I got an offer from Google for the L3 role. My life has literally changed,” he wrote.
Ending the post, he added, “To my manager: Thanks for the insult. It woke me up.”
Reddit Users Cheer His Success
The post drew several reactions from users. A person wrote, “I guess these types of people are my only source of hope and believe that I can also make it.”
Another commented, “Everyone needs that low steep in their life then only they can hit that back with whatever capacity they have but it totally depends on how to handle life we will be looped in tensions just to get things right.”
“The manager seems like the demon from the “Eternal Recurrence” concept of Nietzsche who actually pushed him to change his life. Manager needs to be thanked actually,” another user reacted.
Someone said, “thanks to his manager.”
