Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and Innovative Production Group (IPG), the rights holder of the Lanka Premier League (LPL), on Thursday terminated the franchise agreement with Sports Commune, the owner of Jaffna Kings.
The development comes after franchisee’s was unable to carry out its financial obligations as per the agreement.
Cricinfo reported that Sports Commune had failed to disperse sponsorship funds, leading to players taking the field with black tape covering sponsor logos on their jerseys during their match on July 22. Salaries to players and staff had also not been disbursed.
The breakdown occurred after former India cricketer Manjot Kalra, one of the co-owners of the side, was arrested by the Sri Lanka Sports Investigation Unit last week on charges of corruption. According to news reports, the other co-owner, Mayank Goel, was untraceable after arriving in Sri Lanka.
All rights relating to the team have now gone back to IPG and SLC, which will take full operational control of the side.
