Women police personnel attached to Singappen Special Force (SSF) have started making their presence across Coimbatore city and rural areas.
Coimbatore City Police Commissioner N. Kannan and Coimbatore District (Rural) Superintendent of Police A. Pavan Kumar Reddy flagged off the force in their respective jurisdictions separately on Wednesday, a day after the official launch by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay in Chennai.
In Coimbatore city, two all-women SSF squads have been formed for Coimbatore south and Coimbatore north areas. A squad comprises two sub-inspectors and four constables. A team of one SI and two constables each will be on duty in two shifts.
Police sources said that two separate vehicles have been allotted for SSF in Coimbatore south and north, without affecting operations of other wings.
SSF personnel visited bus stands where they introduced themselves to the public. They also briefed commuters about the new initiative, its objectives and their role in ensuring safety of women, besides appealing them to report offences.
One SSF squad comprising two SIs and four constables has been formed within the jurisdictions of the Coimbatore District (Rural) Police. They will work in two shifts from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 12 midnight.
A team of one SI and two constables each will be on duty in two shifts, said Preethi P.S., Deputy Superintendent of Police, District Crime Branch-II, liaison officer for SSF in Coimbatore district.
SSF personnel carried out intensive surveillance, patrolling and awareness activities in areas falling under the limits of Mettupalayam police station on Thursday.
Special patrols and monitoring activities were conducted at bus stands, bus stops, areas surrounding educational institutions, commercial establishments, and other public places, where people gather in large numbers.
