The crisis within the Trinamool Congress deepened on Wednesday as Jadavpur Lok Sabha MP Saayoni Ghosh reportedly joined the rebel faction led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar.

Sources said Saayoni Ghosh contacted Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, extended her support to the breakaway group and signed the documents backing the faction.

The development comes at a time when the Mamata Banerjee-led party is already facing one of its biggest internal rebellions, with several MPs questioning the party leadership and aligning themselves with the dissident camp.

Saayoni cites lack of support in TMC

According to sources, Saayoni Ghosh believes she no longer has a political future within the Trinamool Congress.

Sources close to her said one of her major grievances was the lack of support from the party leadership when she came under attack during an election campaign. She reportedly felt isolated during that period and claimed that nobody within the party stood by her. She was also allegedly asked to cut short her campaign, a decision that added to her dissatisfaction with the organisation.

The move is particularly significant as Saayoni was recently appointed chief of the party’s women’s wing, making her one of the prominent faces of the Trinamool Congress.

Rebellion gathers momentum

The latest defection comes just hours after another major setback for the party.

Earlier on Wednesday, Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev resigned from the party and stepped down from the Upper House. She became the second MP in a week to resign after former Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy.

Sources said Dev met Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan and submitted her resignation at 1 pm.

Her exit further strengthened the perception of growing unrest within the party’s parliamentary ranks.

Kakoli faction expands

The developments follow claims made by rebel MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar on Monday that nearly 20 Trinamool Congress MPs had sought to align with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Kakoli is leading the dissident faction, which has emerged as the centre of the rebellion against the party leadership.

With Saayoni Ghosh now reportedly joining the group and Sushmita Dev resigning from Parliament, the political turbulence within the Trinamool Congress appears to be intensifying, posing fresh challenges for Mamata Banerjee and the party leadership.
