Residents Welfare Associations petition civic bodies seeking inclusion of the Otteri Nullah under major restoration programmes and a separate representation seeks road connectivity for Velachery West AGS Colony.
The representation by Federation of Anna Nagar Residents’ Association on Otteri Nullah stated that the waterbody, which carries floodwaters and drains into the Buckingham Canal, had not been included among priority projects, despite pollution from sewage, industrial effluents and solid waste, along with siltation and reduced carrying capacity.
In another petition, the RWAs of AGS Colony and Saraswathy Nagar in Velachery sought a direct road link to the MRTS Inner Ring Road servicelane through Saraswathy Nagar 8th Street across Veerangal Odai. The locality, with a population of over one lakh, still lacks direct access and depends on indirect routes.
Following the petitions, a joint inspection was carried out by the RWAs and Corporation officials to assess the proposed alignment. A temporary road has been formed across Veerangal Odai and officials indicated that work on a permanent bridge would be taken up after the alignment comes under civic control.
Residents also flagged recurring flooding in Velachery West AGS Colony falling under Ward 176 in Zone 13 during the northeast monsoon. Floodwater enters the groundfloor in houses and remains stagnant for several days, with levels reaching up to 6 to 7 feet in some locations. The area receives runoff from more than 35 neighbourhoods, while an existing 4-foot storm water drain is considered inadequate for handling the flow.
