Silchar: Residents of Sribhumi town on Sunday blocked the Brajendra Road seeking permanent measures to tackle recurring waterlogging and artificial floods.“For the past few years, most of the drains in the town have become defunct. Last year, some drainage work was undertaken, but allegations of large-scale corruption surfaced during implementation. At several places, newly-built drain walls collapsed after rainfall,” said a resident, Ashoketaru Chaudhury.Heavy rainfall led to severe waterlogging in several parts of Silchar town, exposing the chronic drainage crisis faced by residents every season.“Roads in our locality go under water within hours of rainfall. Children, elderly people and office-goers face immense hardship,” said a Saratpally resident.Meanwhile, continuous heavy rainfall over the past two days triggered an artificial flood-like situation in several parts of Hailakandi district, leaving large areas submerged and disrupting normal life.
