Primary & secondary schools in Tinsukia start at 8am as heatwave persist

Dibrugarh: With maximum temperatures in Tinsukia hovering between 36°C and 37°C over the past several days, district authorities have revised school timings across all levels — from primary to senior secondary — to safeguard students’ health. Under the order, which came into effect on Wednesday, schools that earlier began at 9 am will now start an hour earlier. As per the revised schedule, lower primary schools will run from 8 am to 12.30 pm, upper primary schools from 8 am to 1.30 pm, and high, higher secondary and senior secondary schools from 8 am to 1.45 pm. The order applies to govt, provincial, govt-aided and private institutions across the district.“In view of the scorching heat prevailing in the district, it has been deemed necessary to modify the school timing, considering the health and safety of the students,” the inspector of schools said in the order. The order also prescribes a standard operating procedure, directing schools to hold morning assemblies in shaded areas, encourage students to carry water bottles and drink water frequently, and exempt them from wearing socks, shoes and neckties.Schools have also been instructed to ensure immediate medical attention for heat-affected students, keep ceiling fans functional and electrical fittings safe, prioritise cleaning of toilets and urinals, and arrange classroom seating to ensure proper ventilation.
