Timely intervention by a few people saved the life of an infant boy, who was found abandoned and partially buried, near Madukkarai in Coimbatore district on Monday.

The incident took place at Arisipalayam within the limits of the Madukkarai police station around 3.30 p.m. A woman resident of Moolakadai Street at Arisipalayam noticed an infant’s legs protruding from the soil close to the compound wall behind a company when she took her pet dog for a walk. The infant’s body and face were partially buried.

The woman immediately alerted a nearby grocery shop owner, who in turn informed Babu, a hospital assistant attached to the Arisipalayam Government Hospital. Mr. Babu rushed to the spot and informed the duty doctor at the government hospital. A medical team reached the location and rescued the infant, estimated to have been born a few hours before the incident. The newborn was shifted to the hospital, where initial treatment and medical care were provided.

The police said the infant, who was found to be in stable condition, was later referred to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for further care and treatment.

The Madukkarai police have launched an investigation to trace persons who abandoned the baby.
