Nearly 70 kg of soy sauce and other sauces and 10 litres of beverages nearing their expiry dates were seized from two food storage facilities in Bengaluru on Saturday (August 8). The facilities supply food items, including meat and fish, to five-star hotels and other caterers in the city.
The action came a day after the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) found large quantities of stale meat and vegetables during inspections at several star hotels in Bengaluru.
The inspection continued on Saturday, and 30 teams of Designated Officers and Food Safety Officers cracked down on food storage and distribution facilities. The teams inspected facilities operated by Coldman Logistics Private Limited and Radhakrishna Foodland Limited. They checked the quality of food stored at the facilities, along with the storage and safety measures in place.
The beverages seized included strawberry-flavoured drinks and other beverages nearing expiry. The FDA also collected five meat samples and 13 other food samples and sent them for analysis.
The inspections on Friday (August 7) targeted 26 three-star and five-star hotels and revealed several food safety violations, including unhygienic food handling and storage conditions, fungal growth on vegetables and failure to maintain separate storage areas for vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items.
“Appropriate legal action will be initiated against food business operators found violating food safety and quality requirements under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and Rules, 2011,” FDA said.
