Mistaking him to be a jeweller with a bag of cash, three unidentified persons shot dead a man when he resisted a snatching attempt.
The incident took place at Ram Nagar Colony of Amritsar district on Friday night when the deceased, identified as one Rajesh, was going to attend a event to mark Valmiki birth anniversary.
The FIR mentions that Rajesh from Dayanand Nagar was with his friend when three men on a bike apprehended them near New Rialto Chowk.
Police said that the robbers thought him to be a jeweller and tried to snatch the bag. “However, when he resisted, they open fired at him. A bullet hit him on the chest and he died on the spot, following which, the accused fled the spot,” SSP North Varinder Singh Khosa said, adding that they are scanning CCTV footage for clues.
