Meghalaya man learns about son’s lynching on social media, files FIR

Shillong: A video circulating on social media showing a youth being brutally beaten to death inside a village dorbar hall in Pynter, under Pynursla Civil Sub-Division of East Khasi Hills district, has led to the filing of an FIR against the village headman and members of the village defence party (VDP).The video shows the headman, Fullmoon Khongsdoh, and VDP members assaulting the youth, identified as Trophimos Khongmawlo, who was allegedly suspected of carrying alcohol. The footage prompted the victim’s father, Netnobiweit Khongsdong, to lodge a formal complaint with the police, alleging that his son was lynched by the village authorities.According to the FIR filed at Sadar Police Station in Shillong on May 5, the incident occurred on April 7 night. The complaint states that VDP members brought the body, wrapped in a sack, to the victim’s home the next morning and buried it on April 9, allegedly without allowing the father to pay his last respects. The father alleged that he was not permitted to properly see his son’s body, as the coffin had been sealed by the village headman. During the funeral, the family was told that the youth had died after consuming poison. However, after the video of the assault surfaced online, the father leared about the assault. Police have initiated a probe into the incident.
