Shillong: The Meghalaya assembly will pass a resolution to formally oppose and ban uranium mining in the state, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said on Thursday.“Our stand has always been clear and unwavering. After a meeting with several NPP leaders, we have reaffirmed our commitment to stand with the people of Meghalaya. As a govt, we will continue to oppose uranium mining and will bring forward a resolution to formally ban uranium mining in the state,” the CM said in a virtual address. He was responding to recent and ongoing speculation and media reports on alleged moves towards uranium mining in Meghalaya.“I have made it very clear a number of times that our govt is against uranium mining and we will oppose any form of attempt to have uranium mining in the state,” he said. Sangma, who is also president of the ruling National People’s Party, informed that he held a detailed meeting with a large number of party leaders on Wednesday.During the discussion, NPP leaders unanimously suggested that the state govt and the assembly should pass a resolution opposing uranium mining.“Based on the suggestions and the decisions made by the NPP leaders in the meeting on Wednesday, we are moving forward and we will be working towards passing a resolution to oppose the mining of uranium in our state,” Sangma said.“We are aware about the different implications that it could have on our people, on our environment, on our forests and the overall impact that it can have on the people and the future of our state. There are too many risks involved. Hence, we are very firm that we will oppose uranium mining in our state,” he asserted.
