Guwahati: Two men were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly killing a retired postal employee in the city’s Bhootnath area. Another accused in the case is on the run.Bharalumukh police said Hareshwar Deka, a resident of Shantipur, was killed around 11.45 pm on Sunday. The arrested accused, Anwar and Raza, are alleged drug peddlers in the area.According to police, Anwar and Raza were drinking at the apartment of three transgender persons — Neha, Jenny and Mayuri — when Deka and his friend Sonu Choudhury arrived to meet Neha over a personal matter.Police said Deka bumped into Anwar on the staircase as the two accused were leaving, triggering an altercation in which Deka was grievously injured. During the scuffle, Anwar allegedly called his brother Sanwar, while Raza called his wife, Marami Begum, to the spot. Sonu fled.Police said Anwar, Raza and Sanwar then assaulted Deka again, repeatedly hitting him on the head. After Deka died, the accused allegedly dumped his body near the Kali temple in Bhootnath and fled.Residents spotted the body and informed Deka’s family, who took him to GMCH, where he was declared dead. Sanwar is absconding. Police are probing whether the three transgender persons were involved in the case.
