Four women labourers died on the spot while two more sustained major injuries after a lorry ploughed into them when they were crossing Kovvur Bridge in Kakinada on Saturday (May 16, 2026).
The incident occurred when a group of six women were on their way to work under the VB-G RAM G, formerly known as MGNREGA.
The deceased have been identified as Vasamsetti Satyavathi (60), Palika Krishnaveni (35), Chittemma (45) and Chelluri Annavaram (45), suggests the preliminary report of the Kakinada police.
The survivors, identified as Matta Parthi Aruna Kumari and Palika Nagamani, were shifted to Kakinada Government General Hospital (GGH) where they are battling for life.
Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan announced a compensation of ₹4 lakh each to the families of the four deceased.
Expressing grief over the incident, Mr. Pawan Kalyan said that the compensation included ₹2 lakh offered by the Central government under the P.M. Suraksha Yojana and P.M. Jeevan Jyothi schemes.
He asked the officials to ensure better health care services to the injured women.
Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister and Kakinada District In-charge Minister P. Narayana directed the district officials to ensure better treatment for the survivors. The Indrapalem police have registered a case and the investigation is on.
