Vadodara: The Mahisagar police on Wednesday seized a large consignment of liquor being smuggled into state through the Mahisagar river. Acting on a tip-off that bootleggers would use the river route to transport liquor into the state, the police kept a close watch on the river stretch.A police team spotted two boats on the river and gave chase before intercepting them. During the operation, the officers seized Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) worth more than Rs 5 lakh. However, the smugglers managed to flee before they could be apprehended, Santrampur police said.Bootleggers have frequently used the Mahisagar river route to smuggle liquor from Rajasthan into Gujarat. To curb the illegal trade, the police have been conducting regular boat patrols and surveillance along the river.
