A 24-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide following prolonged mental harassment by her husband and mother-in-law, police said on Tuesday. Police have arrested her husband and mother-in-law in connection with the incident
The incident took place in Karnataka‘s Ballari, where the deceased, identified as Aishwarya, lived with her husband, Pradeep Kumar, and mother-in-law.
According to police, Aishwarya married Kumar, a veterinarian with the Animal Husbandry Department, following a relationship.
The deceased’s family has alleged that the harassment began from the day of the marriage. According to them, Kumar failed to support Aishwarya despite her repeated complaints about the distress caused by the mother-in-law.
Unable to bear the situation, she returned to her parental home, where she died by suicide. She left behind a death note detailing her reasons behind taking the extreme step.
Kampli Police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.
The incident comes amid the furore over the death of Twisha Sharma, the 31-year-old Noida resident who was found hanging at her home in Bhopal on May 12.
According to her in-laws, she was found hanging from an exercise rod installed on the terrace of the Bhopal home.
Twisha’s family has accused her husband and in-laws of prolonged mental and physical abuse, dowry harassment and using influence to weaken the investigation. However, her husband’s family has denied the allegations.
