A man narrowly escaped death after suffering a heart attack while playing badminton in Punjab’s Jalandhar, thanks to the quick thinking and prompt intervention of two doctors.
Deepak Pujara was in the middle of a match at the Raizada Hansraj Stadium in the city when he suddenly collapsed to the ground due to a heart attack.
The distressing scene sent the sporting venue into panic mode. The staff called for a medical team. Meanwhile, amid the chaos, two doctors, who had themselves come to the stadium to enjoy a few hours of recreational sports, took charge of the situation.
As soon as Dr Nitish Garg and Dr Piyush Sharma realised what they were dealing with, they instructed the venue’s staff to bring the available emergency health kit and medical equipment.
Without waiting for the medical team to arrive, the off-duty healthcare professionals rushed to Pujara’s side and began administering emergency care as he lay unconscious on the badminton court.
Their efforts to save the badminton player’s life continued even after the medical team arrived at the scene. Dr Garg began administering CPR to Pujara. However, when there was no immediate improvement in his condition, the doctor turned to defibrillation.
Using a defibrillator, and with the assistance of his fellow doctor and the responding medical team, he delivered an electrical shock to Pujara’s heart. The procedure proved successful, as the badminton player’s vital signs began to stabilise.
A video recorded by a bystander captured the desperate efforts to save Pujara’s life. After averting what was bound to be a tragic ending, Dr Garg and Dr Sharma accompanied Pujara even as he was transported by ambulance to a hospital for proper treatment.
