The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to procure a next-generation integrated multi-platform simulator, nicknamed “AGNI”, to enhance training capabilities for fighter pilots and military commanders in view of the rapidly evolving nature of combat theatres.
Its aerial warfare segment will feature four advanced simulator cockpits modelled on frontline IAF platforms such as the Rafale, Sukhoi-30MKI, and Mirage 2000 jets.
“AGNI”, which stands for “Air combat, Ground planning and Network integrated”, will allow personnel from the Army, Navy and Air Force to train on an integrated network.
The Air Force has floated a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the multi-domain combat simulator, which will connect fighter jets, drones, and missiles on a single real-time network.
Unlike conventional single-platform simulators, AGNI is intended to replicate the complexity of modern multi-domain warfare using virtual reality systems, electronic warfare environments and high-definition satellite imagery.
The AGNI simulator system will be open for use by all three branches of the military.
Using the AGNI framework, fighter pilots and air defence controllers will be able to train themselves to operate in a shared simulated environment capable of tracking hundreds of targets on one display.
The setup will also be capable of replicating rival combat aircraft such as the F-16, F-22 and China’s J-10 and J-11 fighter jets to provide realistic adversarial combat training.
Equipped with motion-based feedback technology, the simulators are designed to mimic real-flight conditions, including take-offs, intense high-G manoeuvres, and weapon deployment scenarios.
Integrated virtual and mixed-reality systems, combined with high-definition satellite imagery, will enable pilots to undertake training across diverse operational environments, including night operations and challenging weather conditions like fog, rain, low visibility and dense cloud cover.
