The Imran Tahir-led Guyana Amazon Warriors beat San Francisco Unicorns by six runs in a low-scoring thriller in the final of the Global Super League (GSL) held in Providence, Guyana on Saturday.
The 47-year-old has now captained his side to back-to-back GSL titles. He was also the skipper when the Guyanese side won its maiden Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title in 2023.
Defending the title looked well out of reach when Guyana was shut out for just 85 in the first innings after opting to bat first. It was another veteran bowler, Peter Siddle, that did the damage with a stunning early spell.
The 41-year-old Australian pacer ran through the top order to register figures of 3 for 18. USA leg-spinner Anirudh Immanuel then picked three of his own to reduce the home team to 29 for eight inside nine overs.
Late contributions with the bat from Dwayne Pretorious, Mathew Forde and the skipper helped take the side close to 90.
It did not take long for Sanfranciso to be put under pressure in the chase, and the Major League Cricket side was reduced to 28 for three thanks to a twin strike from Pretorius.
Mohammad Nabi and Tahir then shared five wickets between them as they skittled the Unicorns out for 79, with Siddle’s late batting salvo proving to be in vain.
