A student died on Wednesday after falling from the terrace of a girls’ hostel at IIMT University in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut, triggering panic across the campus.
The deceased has been identified as Anu Gupta, a final-year MBA student originally from Saharanpur, who was residing at the university’s Sarojini Naidu Girls’ Hostel.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 9:30 am. A hostel maid discovered her lying in a pool of blood and quickly alerted other students, following which a crowd gathered at the scene and the university administration was informed.
Gupta had fallen headfirst, sustaining severe head injuries. Her face was completely covered in blood and her condition was so critical that identification proved difficult.
Police reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem.
Initial investigation had not been able to establish whether the incident was an accident or suicide. Police are questioning hostel residents and university staff.
They are also reviewing CCTV footage from cameras installed across the hostel premises to piece together the sequence of events leading up to her death.
“All aspects are being investigated. Two teams have been formed to probe the entire matter. Legal action will be taken based on whatever facts come to light,” said Meerut SP (Rural) Abhijit Kumar.
The university campus is in a state of grief following the incident, with fear and anxiety visible among the students. Police said the exact cause of death will only be determined after the post-mortem report and further investigation.
