‘I Found You Interesting’: Foreigner Says Zomato Support Guy Texted On WhatsApp Using Complaint Details
A foreigner has alleged that a Zomato customer support executive used her personal phone number, which she had shared during a support interaction, to contact her on WhatsApp days later. Sharing screenshots of their conversation on Reddit, the woman said the incident left her uncomfortable and concerned, especially because the executive might have access to her personal details, including her address and government name.
“Guy from support used my personal phone number,” the title of the post read, where she shared that she had placed a food order through Zomato but did not receive it. She then decided to contact the platform’s customer support, where an executive assisted her and asked for her phone number, saying it was required to resolve the issue.
“I’m a foreigner who ordered from Zomato. Because I did not receive my order, I reached out to support and was helped by a guy. He asked for my phone number, saying he needed it to solve my issue, so I provided it in the chat,” she wrote. “However, after providing it in the chat, he changed his tune, saying he didn’t need it anymore and that he’d just refund me the money, which I was happy with.”
“Entire Thing Is Weird To Me”
However, a few days later, she allegedly received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number. Initially confused, she asked the sender who he was. He introduced himself as “a good wisher of your” and identified himself as an “IT professional.”
When she asked how he got her number, he said that he found her “interesting” and had sourced her contact through mutual connections. He told her that if she was not comfortable with the texts, he would stop, but he did not. It did not take the foreigner long to recognise the guy because of his name. Once she asked him if he were the guy from Zomato who had helped her out, he accepted it.
“At some point, he admitted that he had saved my phone number for personal purposes,” she said. “I was not happy with this, but was not too bothered because he seemed friendly. However, he kept trying to hit me up, and I didn’t want to entertain this.” She shared that the man even got offended and blocked her when she stopped responding to him.
She clarified that she did not necessarily want the executive to lose his job. She admitted the incident left her uneasy. “I’m concerned with the fact he got so offended over such a non-issue and that he’s access to my government name, phone number and living address, because his reaction was unhinged to me,” she said. “What do I do? Should I leave it?! I don’t want him to lose his job, but this entire thing is weird to me.”
“Call The Police And Raise A Complaint”
The post has since sparked discussion online, with many users urging the woman to report the incident, arguing that customer information collected for service-related needs should never be used personally.
An individual mentioned, “Go to Zomato and open a support ticket or email them; this is so creepy and don’t worry about him losing his job. Something tells me you’re not the first person this guy is bothering.”
“This is a total breach of privacy and company policy. Please report it to Zomato immediately,” someone else commented.
“Call the police and raise a complaint,” said another.
“My God, that is terrifying. Informing Zomato and the police is very important. This creep has your address!” a different user shared.
