Uttar Pradesh, long known as India’s political heartland, is now building a new identity as a major defence manufacturing hub, with BrahMos missiles, drones and advanced defence systems taking shape across the state.
The transformation is being driven by the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, announced in the Union Budget of 2018-19 with the aim of increasing domestic defence production, reducing India’s dependence on imports and turning the country into a major global defence exporter.
The corridor stretches across six cities – Lucknow, Kanpur, Jhansi, Aligarh, Agra and Chitrakoot – and is being developed as more than a cluster of factories. The project is designed to create an ecosystem spanning research, testing, innovation, manufacturing and skilled talent.
The impact of the project is already becoming visible, with investment proposals worth more than Rs 35,000 crore attracted to the corridor.
A BrahMos missile manufacturing facility is coming up in Lucknow, while major defence companies including HAL, BEL, BDL and Adani Defence are investing across the corridor.
The growing presence of defence manufacturers is giving different cities within the corridor specialised roles in India’s expanding defence ecosystem.
Aligarh is emerging as a hub for drones and electronic warfare systems, while Kanpur and Jhansi are strengthening their defence manufacturing capabilities.
The development is aimed at building a broader network in which research, production and innovation work together to support India’s defence requirements and export ambitions.
