A marketing professional experienced this after joining a new company with a 30 per cent pay increase. Just three months after relocating for the role, they were let go during a company-wide restructuring. The employee later shared their experience on Reddit, explaining their background and the sudden job loss at Wayground, formerly Quizizz.
Employee Moves To New Company With Relocation Costs Covered
The role required the employee to move cities since it was a five-day in-office position. The company also covered relocation costs, including flights, movers, packers, and brokerage fees.
During the hiring process, the employee understood that the company was shifting from a B2C focus to a stronger B2B direction. They said they adjusted quickly to the new role and worked on early content and marketing plans.
Company Restructuring Leads To Sudden Layoffs Across Teams
Things changed when the company announced a restructuring cutting about 15 per cent of its workforce. The Reddit user was also affected. The post said it was the company’s biggest layoff so far and hit several teams across levels.
“From what I’ve heard internally, it was the largest layoff in the company’s history. Entire teams were affected. Senior engineers, fresh graduates from top institutes, experienced professionals, and many talented people lost their jobs,” the post said.
Online Users Say Short Stint Is Not A Red Flag
Now back in the job market, the employee worried about recruiters judging the short three-month stint and multiple job switches over the years.
Many Reddit users responded with reassurance that layoffs are common and do not harm career prospects when explained clearly.
“Not an issue. I was in a similar situation not very long ago. I openly told every interviewer that I was laid off due to a large scale company wide restructuring. Not only did I get the job, but every interviewer later praised me for being open and humble. That wasn’t even my intention,” a user commented.
Another wrote, “I got laid off after six months, literally just after my probation ended, because they shut down my entire project along with the rest of the team. As long as you have a genuine reason for leaving, apart from family, medical, or wedding related reasons, you should be fine.”
“We suffer more in imagination than reality,” a comment read.
