Karnataka Congress chief and CM-designate DK Shivakumar has called for patience, maintaining a strictly measured stance on the upcoming government formation. Speaking to reporters on Friday, he downplayed intense speculation regarding the official timeline for the ministerial oath-taking ceremony. Shivakumar emphasised that crucial legislative protocols must be completed before any definitive announcements can be made, underscoring that the formal selection of the leadership remains the immediate priority.
“I do not know who will be elected as the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader yet,” Shivakumar stated, addressing queries about the transition timeline. “Until that decision is officially formalised by the legislators, how can I say when the oath-taking ceremony will take place?” His remarks come at a time when the state is closely watching the political handoff following outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s decision to step down, a move that has effectively recalibrated the ruling party’s internal alignments.
Beyond the immediate leadership transition in the state capital, Shivakumar also shed light on critical organisational decisions currently being finalised in coordination with the party’s central leadership in New Delhi. Addressing the pending nominations for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, he indicated that the list of candidates for Karnataka would not be announced in isolation. According to Shivakumar, the party high command has decided to release the names of the Rajya Sabha nominees simultaneously alongside the candidate lists for other states, ensuring a synchronised national rollout.
The Election Commission of India has scheduled the upcoming biennial elections for four Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka to be held on June 18. The four retiring members from the state are Mallikarjun Kharge (Congress), HD Deve Gowda (Janata Dal – Secular), Iranna Kadadi (Bharatiya Janata Party), and K Narayan (Bharatiya Janata Party), whose six-year terms expire on June 25.
Concurrently, deliberations are moving swiftly regarding appointments to the Karnataka Legislative Council. As the state unit president, Shivakumar confirmed that he has already executed his institutional responsibilities by submitting comprehensive recommendations to the high command. “I have given my suggestions on the MLC names,” he noted, signalling that the selection process for the upper house is now in its final stages of vetting. As the party balances complex caste equations and regional representation, Shivakumar’s approach highlights his focus on maintaining absolute organisational stability during a high-stakes transition.
