Dhubri: Assam Police seized heroin estimated to be worth around Rs 6 crore and arrested two persons during a late-night naka-checking operation at the interstate check gate at Srirampur on the Assam-West Bengal border under Gossaigaon subdivision of Kokrajhar district.A police source in Kokrajhar said the operation was conducted around 3am on Sunday based on specific intelligence inputs. Police intercepted a vehicle suspected of transporting narcotics and found 244 packets of heroin concealed inside a specially built secret compartment.The two occupants, identified as Shravan Kumar, 23, and Ashok Kumar, 25, of Barmer district in Rajasthan, were arrested on the spot.Police said the vehicle was moving without a registration number and displayed a National Highways Authority of India board to avoid suspicion.During preliminary interrogation, the accused allegedly told police they received the vehicle in Guwahati and were instructed to deliver it to Hasimara in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district.A police source said the seized contraband weighed about 3kg . The estimated market value of the heroin was around Rs 6 crore, he added.The operation was led by Aziza Gulenur, assistant superintendent of police, crime branch, Kokrajhar, along with Gossaigaon SDPO Monturam Bora, Gossaigaon police station officer-in charge KS Simte, Simultapu police outpost in charge Sanjib Handique, and other personnel.Talking to TOI, Handique said the vehicle was stopped as it had no number plate and the occupants appeared nervous. “When searched, the cabin built on the rear seats of the vehicle was found to contain the heroin packets concealed inside it,” he said.Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act, and further investigation is underway to trace the interstate drug-trafficking network linked to the consignment.
