“Consultation fee se bachne ke liye insaan kuch bhi karega (People can do anything to save the consultation fee),” said a Punjab-based doctor after an individual came to a clinic to enquire about laser treatment. She claimed she only wanted to have a “small chat” with the doctor after being told that a consultation would be chargeable.
Dr Prabhleen Kaur, who works at a clinic in Punjab, shared the incident in an Instagram video, explaining how what initially appeared to be a routine enquiry turned into an argument over the doctor’s consultation fee. The woman was unhappy with the response and left the clinic only to return with her husband a little later.
This time, the woman’s husband approached the clinic staff and said he wanted to meet the doctor merely to ask how he was doing and have a “small chat” with him. When the staff asked whether he knew the doctor personally, he clarified he did not. They told him that he could meet the doctor after paying the consultation fee.
“Aree humko haal chaal poochna hai, haal chaal puchne ke bhi paise lagte hain (We just want to ask how he’s doing, you will charge money for that as well),” the man allegedly said, questioning why he should have to pay for what he described as nothing more than “small talk.”
The staff then politely asked him if he would come out after asking the doctor how he was doing and would not ask anything about the laser treatment that his wife wanted to discuss. The man did not deny that he would eventually ask about the treatment, saying, “Wo toh hum pocchenge hi (That we will definitely ask).”
The doctor ended her video, saying, “The irony! People want to pay for anything but a doctor’s fee.”
In the caption of the post, she wrote, “Doctor ki consultation avoid karne ke liye aadmi kya-kya nahi karta! Google, YouTube, ghar ke nuskhe, WhatsApp University… sab try kar lega, bas doctor ko nahi dikhayega! But jokes apart — health mein jugaad har baar kaam nahi karta.”
Internet Is Divided Over The Incident
The incident has since sparked a discussion about when a conversation with a doctor should be considered a consultation and whether patients should be charged simply for asking about the cost of a procedure.
“Patient’s greatest clinical skill: finding 101 creative ways to escape the consultation fee!” joked a user.
Another wrote, “Very True! They can buy branded clothes with fixed prices, jewellery and everything to increase their status, but when they visit a Doctor they become a widow, poor, retired, rental, etc and try not to pay or pay very little.”
Meanwhile, an individual quipped, “I don’t care what you think, but if someone just wants to know the price of a treatment, there shouldn’t be a consultation fee! They’re not asking for medical advice. They’re not getting treated. They’re literally just asking about the cost.”
“Doctors ne bhi loot macha rakhi hai … agar three days or five days k ander report dikhane ki bhi fee honi chahiye kya ?” asked another individual.
