Graphic Designer Says She Was Fired 19 Days After She Relocated For The Job; Internet Adds: ‘Sue Them’
Landing a new job after months of searching is supposed to mark the beginning of a fresh chapter, but for one graphic designer, that new start came to an abrupt end less than three weeks after she packed up her life and moved to a new city. She believed it was her dream role until one email turned her life upside down.
Taking to Reddit, the graphic designer, who lives in the US, wrote, “Fired from my job after 19 days- after I relocated.” She began her post, writing, “(I) am still in absolute shock and just need to get this out.” The professional, who has over two decades of experience, shared that she landed the role of a senior designer position at a major utility cooperative following what she described as a “brutal stretch of unemployment.”
After clearing several rounds of interviews, she accepted the position, relocated to a new city, signed an apartment lease, and even purchased the essentials needed to settle into her new home. However, she shared that the experience got off to a rocky start.
“They Completely Upended My Life”
“The first week and a half was classic corporate chaos,” she said. “They didn’t even have my working laptop ready for days. Despite the lack of onboarding, I jumped right in. I helped execute a major department project and meeting. My direct supervisor literally texted me afterwards telling me my work was ‘excellent,’ ‘well organised,’ and ‘well run.’ I felt so relieved. I told my family and friends that I loved it here and that this was my fresh start.”
Things took an unexpected turn when she sent a routine and professionally worded email asking about scheduling flexibility. She added, “The next day, I was called into an office. The Chief Communications Officer (the head of the entire department) personally handed me a termination letter. Her reason? ‘You’re just not a good fit.’ When she handed it to me, she actually smiled. Then she walked away.”
The sudden dismissal, she said, left her in a difficult financial situation. “They completely upended my life, forced me to incur thousands of dollars in relocation costs and a binding lease, praised my work as excellent, and then threw me away like trash over a routine question after less than 20 days on the payroll,” she added.
She has since sent a formal demand letter to the HR and executives of the organisation, seeking reimbursement for her relocation and expenses related to breaking her lease. “The emotional whiplash is real,” she shared. “Please tell me I’m not crazy, because right now my brain is trying to blame myself for a corporate nightmare I had absolutely no control over.”
Internet Asks Her To Sue The Company
The incident resonated with several people online, with many expressing sympathy for the graphic designer, while others were shocked by such an abrupt termination of employment.
“You’re not crazy, and I’m so very sorry this happened to you. What they did to you was unprofessional and unethical,” said a user.
Another commented, “Sounds sociopathic.”
Someone else said, “I’d sue the s–t out of them.”
Meanwhile, a person suggested, “I would definitely engage an employment attorney to see what your rights are. We must start fighting back against these companies that are doing this and think that it’s ok.”
