Major road infrastructure works, including the elevated corridor/grade separator project connecting Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi squares funded by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways have now moved towards the execution stage raising the hopes of residents to commute without facing much traffic bottlenecks in Puducherry.

After the foundation for the grade separator was laid by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in October last year, the Letter of Acceptance has now been issued to the firm for taking up the work at an estimated cost of around ₹436 crore.

The corridor, covering a total length of 3.877 km, including additional approach ramps, would be one of the major projects taken up in the recent times for improving traffic movement in the town. Work is expected to commence soon after the contractor remits the Performance Guarantee as part of tender guidelines.

The project to improve the stretch from Ganapathichettikulam to Rajiv Gandhi Square on East Coast Road has taken off recently. The tender for another road improvement project from Moolakulam junction to Gorimedu junction was being finalised and the work was expected to start soon, said an official.

“In a few weeks from now, these projects will be executed. The projects worth around ₹400 crore would substantially help improve the traffic scenario in the town. The execution of the grade separator project got delayed because of Assembly elections. Now, the project will progress in full swing,” the official added.

The official further said that the process for selecting a consultant to prepare a detailed project report for improving the Puducherry-Cuddalore Road has also started. An elevated corridor connecting Natesan Nagar to Marapalam junction and four-laning of the road stretch from Ariankuppam to Mullodai will be part of the ₹650-crore project.

“The Ministry has agreed to fund the project too and they are in the process of appointing a consultant to prepare the DPR. The project is likely to take shape by late this year or early next year,” said the official.
