Bhubaneswar: The Odisha cabinet on Monday approved implementation of the Waterfront Development Scheme with an outlay of Rs 500 crore over five years, aimed at rejuvenating riverfronts and urban water bodies and turning them into vibrant public spaces.The housing and urban development department will implement the scheme in coordination with development authorities and urban local bodies. It seeks to restore ecological balance while improving urban liveability through accessible, people-friendly waterfronts.Officials said the initiative will focus on sustainable planning and execution to develop continuous and inclusive waterfront spaces catering to residents, tourists and local communities.The project is expected to boost tourism, promote cultural activities, and spur local economic growth while conserving heritage and traditional practices. It will also strengthen climate resilience through improved flood management.The govt said the scheme underscores its commitment to sustainable and inclusive urban development by integrating environmental conservation with economic growth.
