Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has intensified its anti-encroachment drive to reclaim public spaces and improve mobility across the city.GMC cleared encroachments from roads and footpaths at Colony Bazar in Kalapahar, Kanaklata Path in Dakshingaon and Borbari near VIP Road in Six Mile.During Tuesday’s drive at Colony Bazar , officials cleared public land to ease traffic and ensure safer pedestrian movement. “Reclaiming public space is a collective effort towards building a more organised, accessible and citizen-friendly city,” an official from the GMC said.The official said encroachments also contributed to roadside waste disposal and occupied dedicated cycle tracks. At Kanaklata Path, the civic body cleared encroachments along the cycle track, restoring access for cyclists and pedestrians who complained about the obstruction.In a separate late-night operation at Borbari, GMC removed unauthorised structures that narrowed public spaces and impeded movement.“The operation was aimed at creating safer, obstruction-free roads while preventing fresh encroachments in one of the city’s rapidly developing corridors,” the official added.The drives are part of the civic body’s campaign to clear roads, footpaths and cycle tracks of unauthorised occupation, improve pedestrian safety and ease congestion.
