Kanpur: The Ganga river rose by 108 centimetres in Kanpur over the past 24 hours, triggering concerns among residents of villages in the Katri region as the rising water level posed a potential threat to crops in low-lying fields along the riverbank. Authorities have stepped up precautionary measures, including suspending boat operations.According to data released from the Ganga Barrage at 8 am on Sunday, the water level of the Ganga at Shuklaganj was recorded at 110.80 metres, up from 109.72 metres on Saturday morning. The warning level for the Ganga at Shuklaganj is 113 metres.Officials attributed the sharp rise in the river’s water level to the increased discharge from Haridwar and Narora.

On Sunday morning, 66,230 cusecs and 67,419 cusecs of water were released from Haridwar, while 64,198 cusecs were discharged from the Kanpur Ganga Barrage. Consequently, a total of 1,33,649 cusecs of water flowed into the Ganga.In view of the situation, the district administration had already taken precautionary measures along the riverbank. Water police were deployed at the Ganga Barrage, and directions were issued to suspend boat operations.For several days, the Ganga’s water level had been steadily receding. However, the sudden rise between Saturday and Sunday heightened concerns among the administration and residents living along the riverbank. Officials said the river level may continue to rise in the coming days due to ongoing rainfall in the mountainous regions.
