Deep inside the Gir National Park in Gujarat, the legendary friendship of two Asiatic lions unfolded. Named Jai and Veeru, after the iconic characters of the 1975 film Sholay, they once ruled the forest, and their bond then became a symbol of loyalty and brotherhood. Born around 2015, Jai and Veeru grew up in the same forest and became one of the most powerful lion duos in the Kennedypur-Natalia VD region of Gir. Together, they challenged other dominant males and established their control over a vast 140 sq. km territory. (Image: YouTube/@Parimal Nathwani)
Jai and Veeru ruled their territory, led a pride of around 15 lionesses and fathered nearly 30 cubs. They were fearless and very confident and would be seen moving along the safari paths. Their bond was more than just mere hunting partners. On many occasions, rangers and photographers found Jai and Veeru walking, sitting, and patrolling their area side by side. Their popularity travelled far beyond the boundaries of the park. Tourists, wildlife photographers and locals eagerly waited for their sightings together. But like all things, their friendship and enduring bond also came to an end with a fatal attack. During territorial battles in 2025, both Jay and Veeru suffered severe injuries. Jai was attacked when Veeru was away, and later Veeru was also badly wounded. (Image: YouTube/@Parimal Nathwani)
Despite all the treatment they received, the lion duo ended up succumbing to their injuries. While Veeru died on June 11, 2025, Jai died on July 29, 2025.
