Hyderabad: A scamster posing as a police official extorted Rs 27 lakh by threatening to arrest a 54-year-old Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) worker from Neredmet in a digital arrest fraud. Malkajgiri cybercrime police registered a case and launched a probe to identify and arrest the accused.The victim received a call on Sept 4, 2025, from a person identifying himself as P Naresh, a circle inspector with the crime branch. The caller told the complainant that a criminal case was registered against him. “When I asked for details such as the case number, police station or nature of the offence, the caller refused to provide any information.

He became aggressive and threatened to arrest me immediately unless I paid money to settle the matter,” the victim told police.Fearing arrest, the complainant succumbed to the coercive tactics and transferred Rs 7,000 initially through UPI to a number provided by the accused. The accused then continued to threaten the victim and demanded further payments for senior officers, advocates, witnesses and other officials to close the case. “Under continuous threat of arrest and prosecution, I made 177 transfers for over Rs 27 lakh in the subsequent several months,” the victim said.As the demands persisted, the victim informed his family and, on their advice, he approached the police on Friday. Based on his complaint, a case was registered under relevant sections of the BNS and the IT Act against the accused.
