In second of such incidents in Udupi district in a week, contractor and former president of Mudarangadi Gram Panchayat David D’Souza was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne assailants in Pilar of Mudarangadi Gram Panchayat on Friday.
On July 31, businessman Richard Mascarenhas was allegedly shot dead by one Derrick Crasta in Kundapur town.
A CCTV footage of the incident being circulated on social media showed that one of the assailants approached D’Souza from behind when the latter was about to get into the driving seat of his car in front of St. Francis Xavier Church in Pilar. The assailant hit D’Souza and he collapsed. Soon after he shot at D’souza from a close range, the assailant veiled the weapon to threaten people in the area. The assailant was seen getting onto his accomplice’s motorcycle and fleeing from the scene. Injured D’Souza was taken to a nearby hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead. The reason for the murder was not known.
Police personnel from the jurisdictional Shirva police station and the neighbouring Padubidri police station rushed to spot. Scene Of Crime and Dog squad personnel were also requisitioned. Efforts were being made to trace the assailants, the police said.
