Madikeri: A female elephant died under suspicious circumstances in the middle of a coffee plantation in Kaurikadu Estate near Anandpur in Virajpet taluk.It is suspected that the elephant died due to illness. A heartbreaking scene was seen at the spot, as its calf, which lost its mother, moved around the body in grief.Hearing the cries of the elephant calf, locals went to the spot immediately and informed the forest department. Forest department officials visited the spot after this.Forest department officials stated that the postmortem examination revealed the wild elephant died due to severe internal injuries sustained from a heavy impact upon falling to the ground. They have confirmed that there is no foul play.Foresters said that they will take care of the calf, and will discuss the measures to follow.
