The electric two-wheeler market has crossed the one million sales mark in just seven months of 2026 as it has reached the milestone earlier than ever before. According to industry registration data, cumulative retail sales crossed one million units on July 6 – showing the rapid pace at which EVs are gaining acceptance across the country.
The achievement comes amid a slew of new product launches, expanding charging infrastructure, improved rural penetration and consumer preference for electric scooters. The industry took considerably longer to reach the same figure in 2025 while 2026 has achieved it before the end of July and it does not show any signs of slowing down either.
The volumes indicates that electric two-wheelers are moving from being an alternative choice to becoming a mainstream option for daily commuting. Manufacturers have played a significant role in driving the growth through a flow of new products across different price brackets. Established brands such as TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy, Hero MotoCorp’s Vida, Ola Electric and Honda have intensified competition.

Entry-level commuters, premium scooters and feature-rich connected models have contributed to expanding the customer base. The competitive landscape has also become more balanced. While a handful of brands dominated the market during the early stages of EV transition, multiple brands are now posting consistent sales numbers and it has to be remembered that the increasing participation of mainstream two-wheeler companies has consolidated confidence amongst customers.
Policy measures under the PM E-Drive scheme, favourable GST rates for electric vehicles, state-level purchase incentives and registration benefits have helped improve affordability. At the same time, investment in charging infrastructure has accelerated – reducing range anxiety for prospective buyers. Several manufacturers have also expanded battery subscription programmes.

While metropolitan cities continue to account for a significant share of registrations, demand has grown across Tier-II and Tier-III cities as charging infrastructure improves and ownership costs become more attractive. States such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Delhi remain among the largest EV consumers.
Despite appreciable growth, the industry continues to face challenges. Commodity price fluctuations, battery raw material costs and the gradual reduction of government incentives remain key concerns for manufacturers while charging infrastructure in smaller towns also requires further expansion.
