Elderly couple held under digital arrest for 3 days, duped of Rs 20 lakh

Kanpur: An elderly couple in Sarvodaya Nagar was duped of Rs 20 lakh by a cyber fraudster who posed as a CBI officer, and held them under digital arrest for three days, police said.The accused allegedly trapped the couple by accusing them of links to terrorism and threatening that their daughter, who lives in the US, would be arrested.According to the complaint, Pratima Mangalani (76) received a call on July 16 from a man claiming to be a CBI officer. The caller allegedly accused her of having links to a terrorist organisation and threatened to implicate her and her husband in drug- and terrorism-related cases.The accused also allegedly threatened to have their daughter arrested through Interpol and demanded Rs 22 lakh. Fearing legal action, the couple transferred Rs 20 lakh through RTGS, police said.

However, when the fraudster demanded more money on July 20, the couple realised they had been deceived and reported the matter to the police.Kakadev police station SHO Dharmendra Kumar Ram said a case had been registered on the basis of the complaint and further action was underway.
