Early diagnosis helps in timely treatment of clubfoot

Prayagraj: On the occasion of World Clubfoot Day, a special interaction programme was organised with families of children affected by clubfoot to raise awareness about the importance of early diagnosis and timely treatment of the congenital condition, on Saturday.Chief Medical Officer, Prayagraj, Dr AK Tiwari, CMS Dr Bhavana and Orthopaedic Specialist Dr Ajay Pal addressed the gathering and highlighted the treatment process for clubfoot. They explained that clubfoot is a birth defect in which a child’s feet are twisted inwards at birth. The condition is treatable through a series of six to eight plaster casts, followed by a tenotomy procedure and the use of a corrective brace. The brace is required for up to five years, with regular follow-up visits to ensure successful outcomes.Officials said World Clubfoot Day serves as an important platform to encourage families to seek timely treatment. Under the National Child Health Programme (RBSK), children affected by clubfoot are identified early and referred to govt health institutions for treatment.At the district level, 445 children are currently undergoing treatment for clubfoot, while 535 children have been registered since the programme began. A total of 114 children have successfully completed treatment. Weekly clubfoot clinics are conducted every Saturday at the district hospital.
