Looking up a company before accepting an interview has become common for many job seekers. But one candidate’s decision to back out after reading negative workplace reviews took an unexpected turn when the recruiter responded with a message that many online called a major red flag.
The exchange was later shared on Reddit, where users said the recruiter’s reaction only strengthened the candidate’s decision to walk away.
Candidate Spots Red Flags Before Interview
The candidate shared the post on Reddit under the title, “Canceled an interview due to bad online culture reviews. The owner immediately proved my point.” They explained that they had applied for a senior property manager role and were preparing for the interview when they decided to learn more about the company.
After going through the firm’s online reviews and reading how management responded to employee feedback, the candidate said they noticed what they described as “huge red flags.” Instead of continuing with the hiring process, the applicant politely informed the recruiter that they no longer wished to attend the interview.
According to the screenshot shared in the post, the message read that after reviewing the company’s online presence, they had decided to withdraw from the interview process.
The recruiter, who was also the business owner, replied: “That’s a shame that you made that decision, shows that you also don’t align with my goals and my company values. I just purchased the company a few months ago.” The candidate felt the response only confirmed their concerns.
Reflecting on the exchange, they wrote, “Throwing in ‘I just purchased the company a few months ago’ as an excuse for throwing a defensive tantrum to an applicant tells me everything I need to know about what working under them would have been like. Dodged a massive bullet on this one.”
Reddit Users Back The Applicant
The post quickly drew reactions from Reddit users, many of whom felt the recruiter could have handled the situation more professionally.
One user joked, “Bro pulled the ‘no you’ uno reverse card. CEO of debate over here.” Another wrote, “This is why research a company before I even bother applying to it.”
A third user suggested what they believed would have been a better reply: “Correct response was: Yes I am aware of the previous management’s culture. I have recently purchased this business and am trying to change course. If you decide you want to revisit, our work culture values might align, the door is always open.”
Another commenter mocked the recruiter’s response, writing, “Lol. You are not interested? Well that’s great because I’m so not interested in you. In fact, I am probably more not interested in you than you are not interested in me.”
