Germany is one of those countries that is often praised for its world-class healthcare system. But for one Indian couple living in the country, their recent experiment seeking treatment painted a very different picture.
Taking to Instagram, the woman detailed the difficulties they faced while securing an appointment with a doctor and how they had to wait for a long time for the check-up.
Sharing the video, Simran Kaul Arora, a digital creator, said that before relocating to Germany, she believed the country’s healthcare system would be highly efficient. However, that perception changed after her husband, Shivam, developed an eye infection.
“We Ended Up Waiting For A Long Time”
Initially laga we will get it checked quickly, but that’s when we realised ki doctor tak pahunchna hi itna straightforward nahi hai (Initially we thought we would get it checked quickly, but we soon realised that it was not that straightforward to reach to one),” she said.
As shared by Simran, the couple first visited an emergency medical facility but were directed to another centre that was located nearly an hour away from their home. They got an appointment with a doctor after a week. “Jab finally appointment ke liye gaye (Finally when we arrived for the appointment), we still ended up waiting for a really long time,” she explained.
She said the most frustrating aspect was the difficulty in accessing medical care despite paying taxes and health insurance. “Yeh definitely mere expectations se kaafi different tha before moving here to Germany (This was completely different from what I had expected before moving here to Germany),” she added.
“I genuinely thought getting medical care in Germany would be quick and easy….But this experience completely changed my perspective,” she wrote in the caption. “If you’re living in Germany, has finding a doctor’s appointment been easy for you, or has it been a struggle too?”
Internet Praises Indian Healthcare’s Accessibility
The video quickly gained attention online, with many users sharing similar experiences of navigating healthcare systems in Germany and other European countries, while others compared it with India’s healthcare system and praised it for its accessibility.
“It’s not easy to seek medical support in the EU as we can have in India,” said a user.
Another user wrote, “Healthcare is best in India… In Germany and Canada, it is very difficult to find a doctor.”
“Same situation in Ireland; sometimes you have to wait for 6 months to get treatment if it’s not an emergency,” shared an individual.
Meanwhile, someone commented, “It’s in moments like these that I truly miss India.”
