A simple yet creative way a Delhi teacher took attendance of her students has captured the internet’s attention. Instead of the traditional use of an attendance register and roll call out loud, they were seen using a self-attendance board to mark themselves present for the day.
In the video shared on Instagram, the teacher was seen first entering the classroom, followed by her students one by one. Upon entering, the first thing she did was mark herself present on the handmade self-attendance board.
The DIY board was made using small matchboxes, each labelled with a student’s photograph. Inside every matchbox is one letter “P” for Present.
After she was done marking herself present, the children entered the classroom one after the other and slid open their respective matchboxes to reveal the letter “P”, which marked them present for the day. For those who were absent, the letter “A” appeared on top of their respective matchboxes. “My little ones taking charge,” the caption of the post read.
“Out-Of-The-Box Idea”
The video quickly struck a chord with social media users, many of whom praised the teacher for making an otherwise mundane classroom task interactive and engaging while also encouraging students to take ownership of their daily routine and fostering a sense of responsibility in them.
“What an Amazing initiative & a way to take attendance for increasing the attendance rate, especially in primary school!!!! Hats off to whoever brought this idea to promote self-awareness among children, fun with study,” wrote a user.
“Wonderful and out-of-the-box idea,” said another user.
“Very innovative idea,” quipped a different person.
“When you work in passion, not for money,” a user remarked while praising the teacher.
“What an excellent idea. Children getting engaged with responsibility. Great, Ma’am,” shared an individual.
“Teaching kids how to become corporate majdoor, just kidding; that’s really a great activity. Some must be coming to school in the excitement of this,” another individual commented.
Someone else joked, “Petition to use this attendance system for university and offices.”
Meanwhile, a person jokingly mentioned, “My friends will push my attendance down and their up.”
