A 75-year-old woman was knocked to the road during a chain-snatching attempt in Dehradun after an unidentified man riding an unnumbered Activa allegedly stopped to speak to her before suddenly grabbing the chain from her neck and fleeing.
The incident took place in Vasant Vihar Phase-2, a posh residential area of Dehradun. The entire robbery was captured on CCTV, with footage showing the elderly woman using a walking stick during her evening stroll when the accused approached her on an Activa without a number plate.
According to the CCTV footage, the woman was walking along a relatively deserted road when the rider first passed her. After going some distance, he allegedly turned back and returned towards her.
The man then stopped the Activa near the woman, apparently on the pretext of asking her something. While she was speaking to him, he suddenly pulled the chain from her neck and sped away.
The woman fell to the road during the struggle as she tried to resist the snatching. The fall was so severe that she could not get back on her feet. CCTV footage shows her repeatedly trying to rise, but she remained on the road for some time, unable to stand. The incident triggered panic in the area.
THREE POLICE TEAMS SEARCH FOR ACCUSED
The woman’s son has lodged a complaint regarding the chain snatching at Vasant Vihar police station.
According to the Vasant Vihar station house officer, a case has been registered on the basis of the complaint. Three police teams have been formed to identify and arrest the accused.
Police teams are examining CCTV footage from the area and checking cameras installed at other locations to trace the route taken by the accused after the robbery.
The incident has also raised concerns over security in Dehradun, particularly as it took place despite checking being carried out at several locations in the city ahead of Independence Day.
Police are continuing their efforts to identify the accused based on the CCTV footage.
