A construction worker died of asphyxiation and another was critically injured after being trapped in an under-construction waste tank in Muttoli on Wednesday (July 15, 2026).
The deceased has been identified as Siraj Puthukkudiyil, 40. According to the police, the incident occurred when Siraj entered the waste tank, approximately eight feet in length, to retrieve construction materials left inside. The tank had only a narrow two-foot-wide opening, which severely restricted ventilation and access. While inside, Siraj reportedly experienced severe breathing difficulties and became trapped. Sunil Viswanathan, an employee at a nearby private establishment entered the tank and attempted to rescue Siraj. However, he too fell unconscious in the toxic space.
Fire and Rescue Services personnel from Vellimadukunnu fire station rushed to the spot, pulled out the duo in a 30-minute operation and took them to a nearby hospital. However, Siraj was declared dead on arrival.
A probe has been initiated into the incident to check whether there was any safety rule violation at the construction site. The statements of some of the local residents and construction labourers were also recorded by the police.
The incident highlights the health risks of entering toxic and confined spaces without proper safety gear. In July 2024, a temporary sanitation worker drowned while clearing waste in the Amayizhanjan canal in Thiruvananthapuram.
